Durban Last-Mile Distribution Hub — Township E-Commerce

Concept stage: warehousing and distribution network to serve township e-commerce deliveries across KZN. Market research and pilot design phase.

This project envisions establishing a network of micro-warehousing and distribution hubs strategically located at the edges of KZN's major townships (Umlazi, KwaMashu, Inanda, Phoenix, and Pietermaritzburg). The hubs will serve as last-mile distribution points for e-commerce deliveries, addressing the critical "last mile" problem that makes township deliveries expensive and unreliable. The concept is in the market research and pilot design phase. A pilot hub in Umlazi (Durban's largest township, pop. ~400,000) is being designed to process 500-1,000 deliveries per day. The business model includes B2B services (fulfillment for e-commerce platforms) and B2C services (collection points for residents). Revenue streams include delivery fees, storage fees, and value-added services (return handling, package holding).

South African e-commerce grew by 66% in 2023 and is projected to reach R225 billion by 2026. However, township delivery failure rates exceed 35% due to address verification issues, safety concerns, and lack of delivery infrastructure. Major platforms (Takealot, Mr D Food, Yuppiechef) have publicly identified last-mile township delivery as their biggest operational challenge. KZN is South Africa's second-largest provincial economy with a population of 11 million, including 4+ million in the Durban metro. No dedicated township logistics network currently exists in KZN.

Structured as Township Logistics KZN (Pty) Ltd — currently a sole proprietorship (Sipho Mthembu) that will be converted to a private company upon investment. Proposed post-investment structure: Sipho Mthembu (50%), Investor (40%), Employee Trust (10%).

The pilot hub design includes: 800m² warehouse with racking for 5,000+ parcels, a sorting area with 6 workstations, a small vehicle yard (8 delivery bikes + 2 vans), a customer collection counter, and basic office space. Technology requirements include a warehouse management system (WMS), route optimization software, and a customer notification platform (SMS/WhatsApp). Initial employment: 1 hub manager, 2 sorters, 8 delivery riders, 1 customer service agent. The pilot is designed to validate unit economics before rolling out to additional hubs. Estimated pilot investment: R3.5 million (hub setup + 3 months operating costs). Full 5-hub network: estimated R25-30 million over 24 months.
