Chrome Beneficiation

Chrome Beneficiation is the process of upgrading raw chrome ore by removing impurities and increasing its chromium content to produce a higher-value concentrate suitable for ferrochrome production and other industrial applications.

Chrome beneficiation involves the processing and upgrading of raw chrome ore to improve its chromium content and remove unwanted impurities. The process typically includes crushing, screening, gravity separation, and other concentration methods to produce a higher-grade chrome concentrate. The beneficiation operation creates value by transforming lower-grade run-of-mine ore into a marketable product suitable for ferrochrome production and other industrial applications.

South Africa holds the world’s largest chromite resources, creating a strong opportunity for local chrome beneficiation and value addition. Global demand remains closely linked to stainless-steel and ferrochrome production, while China continues to be a major destination for South African chrome ore. The current reduction in South African ferrochrome production has increased the export of chrome concentrate, creating an opportunity for beneficiation projects to capture greater value locally. In 2026, South African chrome ore exports remain strong, while global demand is supported by growing stainless-steel and ferrochrome production. Key opportunity areas include: Processing lower-grade ore into marketable chrome concentrate. Supplying 40–42% and higher-grade chrome concentrate to international markets. Recovering chrome from PGM tailings and other secondary sources. Developing local beneficiation capacity to increase value addition. Establishing reliable supply relationships with mines, traders and international off-takers.

The chrome beneficiation project will be structured through a dedicated project company responsible for the development, financing, operation and commercial management of the beneficiation facility.
